Part one

The first work of art was created in 1943 by Norman Rockwell. It relates to one of the four freedoms that Franklin D. Roosevelt, the president at the time, outlined in a 1941 speech. The illustration depicts a multigenerational family gathered around a dining table, demonstrating harmony and peace (“A Muse and a Maze: Writing as Puzzle, Mystery, and Magic,” 2015). This artwork has cultural value because it depicts a widely observed holiday that has been observed for millennia in a variety of countries and symbolizes the kind of community thankfulness that brings people together, much like the act of sharing meals. Traditions surrounding Thanksgiving in the past brought together families and communities while representing gratitude for the gods and nourishing land. These celebrations sometimes included lengthy eating that lasted for several days.

One distinguishing feature of the artwork that draws my attention is its meticulous detail work. For instance, the tablecloth’s presence of creases suggests that it may have been pressed. How the artist expertly drew and emphasized the sight of the white dishes against the white tablecloth is another remarkable aspect. The image retains a feeling of spaciousness despite the abundance of details.

The primary goals of Norman Rockwell’s artwork were to evoke feelings of serenity, wealth, and familial unity. The portrayal of the Thanksgiving meal captures an American ideal of closeness and plenty, free of luxury or waste—a goal that society values. It emphasizes people’s ability to go beyond several kinds of needs, including bodily, spiritual, and emotional needs. Instead of an excess, the artwork emphasizes freedom from scarcity and celebrates the joy of sharing with our loved ones. The popularity of the picture, both at the time of its creation and today, is evidence of Norman’s success.

Part Two

Martin Bulinya, a native of Kenya in Africa, created a unique work of art (Chapman & Art, 2008). In the scene depicted in the artwork, locals are sitting together and watching a traditional wrestling bout closely. The sport of wrestling was quite popular in the area, and these after-work meetings gave people a chance to socialize and partake in common delight. These events not only promoted harmony and friendship but also catalyzed revival. People were reinvigorated by the sense of community and the energy exchanged during these gatherings, which prepared them to restart their jobs with fresh vigor. Exploring the values of many cultures not only broadens one’s perspective but also sheds light on the complex process of creating art and the construction of historical narratives. These projects act as stewards of humanity’s amazing achievements, aiding in understanding the present and providing resources for envisioning the future.

Examining other people’s prior experiences may teach us important lessons and give us the chance to change our behavior to be more inclusive. The humanities provide a framework for imagining the effects of innovative ideas—both positive and negative—on our society, politics, and daily lives. This viewpoint gives people the foresight and resiliency they need to deal with life’s unexpected turns and difficulties.

Engaging with people from various cultural origins naturally brings up new insights. The study of various cultures fosters original ways of thinking and addressing problems. This exposure fosters tolerance and causes one to reconsider their prejudices. For instance, this increased tolerance may show up at work, encouraging a culture of acceptance. People are compelled to treat everyone fairly by adopting a culturally aware worldview, which promotes inclusion and justice. Through this complex process of cultural interaction, the humanities support individual development and societal advancement.
